Rosehip Seed Oil

SBI finds sources of products that have attractive chemistries and are unique to the regions where we work.

Rosehip (Rosa Mosqueta in Spanish) is the red or orange fruit with hooked prickles that are left behind after the rose has flowered and dropped its petals. This fruit is globose or oblong with a diameter of 1 to 2 centimeters. Its texture is leathery on the outside and fleshy on the inside and is full of seeds. Rosehip oil is extracted from these seeds. SBI’s Rosehip oil is 100% organically grown and processed, certified by Ecocert. SBI has nearly 25,000 hectares of land registered that is organically harvested. Under SBI’s supervision, the Rosehip is sustainably hand-picked by smallholder farmers and their families and is Fair for Life certified by Ecocert. SBI trains its harvesters in quality assurance of the fruit and safety to the workers. SBI also works with the Chilean Government and local organizations, to compliment and leverage the efforts already done is this region, resulting in a high social impact in the community. SBI’s Rosehip seed oil is cold pressed, an extraction process that ensures that does not degrade the oil’s properties, and no chemicals are added to the completely unrefined extract. The final oil produced has a light amber to reddish hue, an indication of its purity. SBI is the only supplier that sources its fruit from the extreme south of Chile, the Patagonia Austral (Latitude of 47°). This region is one of nature’s last unspoiled, pure places on earth; the quality of the products grown in this region are second to none.
Rosehip has polyphenols, fatty acids, and vitamins that have well-documented health benefits for the skin and the body. Rosehip Seed oil, rich in omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids, can be used in moisturizers and hydrating formulations, as these omega oils are major components of all cell membranes, to which they provide permeability and elasticity, combat inflammation, and replenish lost moisture on the skin. Chilean Rosehip Seed Oil has higher levels Alpha Linolenic Acid, more than 66% of that found in Rosehip crops in Europe. Linoleic acid has a direct role in maintaining the integrity of the water permeability barrier of the skin and plays the crucial role in skin moisture balance. SBI’s Chilean Rosehip Seed Oil also has been shown to have less Oleic Acid competitors. Oleic acid is a healthy mono-unsaturated fat that is good, but at higher levels can have comedogenic effects, resulting in clogged pores. Additional to its beneficial effect on the outermost layers of the skin, when applied, Rosehip oil has been shown to have invigorating activity on the innermost skin layers, fibroblasts and cells that produce collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid and which are responsible to skin firmness.
