As SBI's Chief Development Officer, Jay Ewald has done extensive business development and consulting work in the Americas, Africa, Middle East, Europe and Asia. He has worked for both private clients and international organizations. He is a founding partner in both Southern Cone Farmland and FAF Development.
Jay is an international agricultural entrepreneur involved for the past 40 years in various levels of food value chain management and farming businesses.
After growing up on a family beef cattle and crop farm in Minnesota, he worked in an agricultural investment firm in Kansas City, developed a soybean and cattle farm in Paraguay, started a fruit company and introduced McDonald’s Restaurants to Chile, developed and currently oversees ranching and vegetable and seed crop farms in Argentina and created and managed real estate, construction and cattle operations in Costa Rica. This provided him with a wealth of experiences from acquiring land, starting up companies, executing projects, managing small and large companies, conducting strategic planning, vetting/initiating new business ventures, developing teams, fostering/nurturing relationships, managing operations, human resources and penetrating markets with agricultural commodities including risk management and buying/selling companies.
Jay has undergraduate degrees in Agricultural Economics and Animal Science from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with specializations in Global Business and Finance.
Fluent in English and Spanish, Jay's primary office is in Santiago, Chile, and he also works from Liberia, Costa Rica.

In 1985, Jon was one of five participants in a management-led buyout of Prince from Unilever. He oversaw international operations until the company’s successful sale to Edizione of Italy (Benetton) in December 1990. During that time, the international business grew 2.5 times to represent over 65% of the company’s operating profit and 55% of its sales.
Jon spent 15 years in the transportation industry, working with Pan American, Trans World Airlines, Braniff International, and Mexicana Airlines, where he ultimately served as Senior Manager for the United States, Canada, and the Pacific. He is fluent in Spanish and has a working knowledge of both French and German.
Jon holds an MBA from the Booth School at the University of Chicago and a BA from Case Western Reserve University, and works in the Tucson, Arizona office.
Luis Hinrichs acts as our Director of Chilean Operations. Luis is a second-generation pharmaceutical chemist, and has more than 30 years of experience in the botanical ingredients industry. He is the founder of Kosmetik S.A., a leader in the sector.
Kathleen Kennedy acts as SBI’s Director of Marketing and Communications. Kathleen has 25 years in documentation and communications for corporations, nonprofits, and startups.
The work of the current management team is supplemented by outside service contractors who support SBI in the development of its long-term objects. Others, such as accountants and business and intellectual property lawyers, are available upon request.
